Hatfield Grill ‘N Chill

127 Elm Street, Hatfield, Ma
413-247-5044

September 29, 2020

It is with heavy hearts we must announce that The Grill ‘N Chill will be closing its doors as of Tuesday, September 29, 2020.

The COVID-19 restraints have made it exceedingly difficult for restaurants, especially for establishments like ours with floor plans that make it difficult to meet guidelines. With reduced days, reduced hours, and a reduced seating capacity, it no longer makes financial sense to stay open until we can go back to business as usual, as there is no telling when that will be.

We went from 7 days a week (70 hours) to 4 days a week with limited hours (16). Due to social distancing guidelines and our particular floor layout, we are at an estimated 20% capacity. We modified our way of doing business and gave it our best shot. Though takeout orders picked up, people were still not going out for in-house dining as we were hoping. We understand the fears that many have and respect that.

We were hoping the closure was temporary but after a couple months of closure, we decided to allow another restaurant to lease the building, which they did for approximatly 6 months and closed their doors. We then we had a decission to make...get back into it with the world still in uncertanty in 2021 with Covid scares OR put the place on the market, which is what we did in 2022.

We want to take this time to thank everyone that has supported the Grill ‘N Chill for the 8 years it thrived. It was very humbling to see the lines of people at the Taste of Hatfield in 2020 (just as we were about to close the doors) and to hear all of the great comments about our food, making it especially tough to make that decission to close.

There is so much history at this location and we are hoping that the perfect restaurant will come along and help make more history......…

Opening around 1934 as Pelc’s Café, when they had ball room dancing, etc. The tavern changed hands and names many times through the decades “The Homestead” in the 70’s, “The Paddock” in the 80’s and into 90’s, “Smithsonian” in the 2000’s, and Finally the “Grill ‘N Chill” starting in 2012.

Since 1984, the Paciorek family has had a long personal history with the 127 Elm Street location with owners Tony and Tim both working in the kitchen at the Paddock and Tony also with the Smithsonian.

Tim started delivering newspapers to the Paddock when he was 8yrs old and used to get a complimentary soda and chips from Mack or Bill and would shoot some pool with some of the regulars during his “break”. When Tim was 13, Marty hired him to work in the kitchen for the next 6 or so years where he worked his way from dishwasher to cook until he left to further his electrical career.

Tony then started working for Marty when he was 11yrs old and worked his way quickly from dishwashing to head cook. Tony took what he learned about cooking from Marty (Paddock) and then Peter (Smithsonian) and created a menu that people loved and came from all over the valley to eat at. Tony has been in this kitchen for 23yrs doing what he loved; Cooking and Serving you!

Our staff has also been incredible and we could not have lasted 8 years without them. We thank our families and friends, staff, vendors, and our customers. We look positively to the future and our options for the Grill ‘N Chill and its location. Again, Thank you All!!

We appreciate your support during the time and look forward to serving you soon!!

We are 30 seconds from exit 27 off Rt. 91!
